DIY Making Something New, Out Of Something Old,

Our DIY Kitchen Makeover

My husband Glen and I like working on DIY projects together. We love taking something old and making it new again.  At the beginning of this year we started working on makeover projects and reinventing projects for our home. This is still a work in progress as we find we go with how our creative flow goes.  In the last couple of years we’ve done a few projects here and there, but this year is when all the fun really began.

We started with our kitchen, we painted and then antiqued our kitchen cabinets. Put up new tile back splash, Glen installed more can lights in the ceiling, and also installed under cabinet lighting.

DIY Installing a Dining Room Window

The next DIY project my husband installed a window in our dining room this added so much light and makes the space feel more open.

Farmhouse Style Kitchen Table DIY Makeover

We were wanting a farm style table and chairs with enough seating for all of us. After nearly buying a new one for almost $2000, we decided to try our hand at refinishing one. Here is our result at a cost of a little over $300.

We bought this farm style table at a thrift store and refinished it. This is just after Glen sanded the top.

The chairs show the original stain color.

First layer of stain. This was an espresso color. We followed it with a gray stain, and wiped it off like we did in the first layer of espresso.
Then we did a technique called dry brush, I used white paint and then wiped it off, lastly I used an antique glaze over the table top and wiped it off. Then Glen did three coats of polyurethane. We got the look we were going for, which was weathered wood.
We primed and painted the chairs white. I still need to do the antique glaze in the creases of the chair, to match the table base.
We spent just over $300 for this table and 8 chairs.
We love how it turned out!

In this photo you can see the base, that we painted it white and then we used an antique glaze, that I painted on then wiped it off.

Table leaves in and all the chairs in place around the table. I chose to keep the two end chairs the off white mix match color. I felt it added a special touch to our new look we are going for in the home. Which is a bit of a unique farmhouse style, with my personal touch and flair.

All ready for collective memories of  family dinners, games, laughter and fun! Hopefully we always strive to see that around this wonderful old made new table rather than a collection of dust.

DIY Bringing Fresh New Life And Color To An Antique Dresser

In the next two photos it shows an antique dresser, (sorry no before picture), that my husband had of his late wife’s.  He painted it white and then used the same antique glaze technique that we used before. It looks great! I decorated the top with a lamp I bought at a local home store, and things I had from different rooms in the house to repurpose for new decor. I love our wall decor of the American flag, we bought it at a local antique store from a DIY booth. Great find!  We use the drawers for our large bowls and serving platter sets, also for our placemats.
